5 Breast Cancer Risks You Can’t Control

small__4001173179October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Since most of our clients are women undergoing treatment for breast cancer, we’ll be recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness month by blogging about it each week in October.  The first blog in our series on Breast Cancer Awareness is all about risk factors.  After reading this blog, you’ll understand some of the risk factors you cannot change.  Our hope is that this post will educate you so you’ll know if you’re at a higher risk of having breast cancer.

Gender – Women are 100 times more likely to get breast cancer than men.  Men do get breast cancer from time to time, but women have the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which promotes breast cancer cell growth.

Aging – Like many other health risk factors, your chances of getting breast cancer increases as you age.  This is why it’s important to start getting mammograms during annual physicals as you age, as 2 of 3 invasive breast cancers are found in women 55 and older.

Genetics – 10% of breast cancer cases are thought to be hereditary.  This means if your mother had breast cancer, your risk of having breast cancer increases.

History of Breast Cancer – If you had cancer in one breast, your chances of developing cancer in the other one increases 3-4 fold.  This is different from having a recurrence of cancer.

Early Menstrual Cycle – If you started menstruating early and went through menopause later in life, the increased lifetime exposure to estrogen and progesterone could give you a slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer.

Do you think you or someone you know could have a high risk of breast cancer?  If so, it’s important to do at-home self-examinations along with including mammograms in your annual physical.
